NFL Drafting

2 Reasons That Prove Super Bowl is Contagious Clapway

Every spring, all 32 NFL teams gather for the annual player selection meeting known as the ‘NFL draft’. Let’s break it down: The NFL picks were created to make the game level and allow the most weakest teams the best opportunity at choosing the highest college prospects for the league. The best college players in the country are picked by NFL teams, but first they’re invited to show off their skills and strengths in a series of physical and mental tests at the NFL Combine. The goal is to impress the NFL team’s key personnel and possibly be selected by one of their teams during the three-day NFL Draft.

Every 32 team receives at most one draft pick each round. Reverse order of the season’s finish determines the order of the draft. To keep the NFL competitive, teams with the lowest record are selected first each round. Each team is ranked in the reverse order of previous seasons’ records. The worst team’s record is the one that gets picked first. No matter their record in regular seasons, the Super Bowl champ always receives the 32nd pick.

The current draft lasts for seven rounds, and the broadcast is carried out over three days. Each team has 10 minutes to choose their pick in the initial round. Next, each team has seven minutes to select their pick. Rounds three through six are five minutes long, while rounds three through six take 5 minutes, and round seven takes four minutes. Part of the suspense of the draft is teams trying to ‘move up’ to get a better player or ‘move down’ to acquire more picks.

To determine whether it is worth trading draft spot, most teams use a points system. Every spot is assigned a value in each of the seven rounds. In this example, the Cleveland Browns hold the #1 pick in 2017. The pick has a 3000 point value. To improve their draft positions, the teams may trade picks with one another for future picks. The Browns expect to receive a mixture of picks close to 3000 points in order for a team looking to trade up for this spot. This scenario is advantageous for both the Browns and the team that trades with them. The Browns get to pick the player they want. The Browns get the same benefit. To fill in the numerous holes that the team is facing, they acquire several draft picks. The Browns are in desperate need of help after losing one game last year.
